Nucor awards Primetals continuous thin-slab caster revamp at Decatur plant

The upgrade shifts the caster from a two-roller to a three-roller design, lifting bearing capacity by 50% and improving durability.

Equipment will be manufactured, assembled, tested, and commissioned in Alabama over the next three years.

The design also supports future dynamic soft-core reduction to improve internal product quality.

Nucor Steel Decatur selected Mitsubishi Heavy Industries’ Primetals Technologies to revamp its continuous thin-slab caster at the Decatur, Alabama plant.

The project targets wider, more robust segment frames and improved spray patterns while maintaining current quality and production targets.
