Nvidia bets $13 billion on open AI models with Hugging Face deal
NVDA•Deal terms and developer concerns
Nvidia will pay about $11.9 billion to Hugging Face investors under the deal, while offering an equity-based retention program of up to $1 billion for staff who join Nvidia.
The two companies already work together to help developers use Nvidia's computing services on the platform.
Some analysts and developers said they were concerned that Nvidia may gradually neglect rival hardware, making its chips the only practical choice for those building on Hugging Face.
"While they have stated otherwise, it is likely that, at a minimum, technical methods will get instrumented to provide a competitive advantage," said Harold Byun, CEO of BlueRock, a startup that helps companies run AI systems safely.
