Nvidia Commits $4 B to U.S. AI Optics R&D, Launches 6G Partnerships
Nvidia is investing $2 billion each in Lumentum and Coherent under separate multiyear agreements that include multibillion-dollar purchase commitments and future capacity rights for advanced lasers and optical networking components. It also launched 6G partnerships with T-Mobile, SoftBank and Cisco to develop AI-native wireless architectures.
1. $4 Billion Optics Investments
Nvidia agreed to invest $2 billion each in Lumentum and Coherent under separate multiyear agreements that include multibillion-dollar purchase commitments and future capacity access rights to secure critical laser and optical networking components for next-generation AI data centers.
2. Manufacturing and R&D Expansion
The investments will fund US-based facility expansions, with Lumentum building new fabrication plants and Coherent scaling its research and manufacturing operations to boost output of high-performance lasers, silicon photonics and optical subsystems.
3. 6G and Telecom Partnerships
Nvidia also announced collaborations with T-Mobile, SoftBank and Cisco to advance software-defined, AI-native 6G networks, focusing on AI-RAN architectures and future wireless systems that can evolve through software updates and embedded intelligence.
