NYSE short interest rose 2.7 percent in mid-September
SPY•NYSE short interest rose 2.7% to about 22.780 billion shares as of Sept. 15, from 22.174 billion shares on Aug. 31.
1. Short interest increases
Short interest on the New York Stock Exchange rose 2.7% in mid-September, the exchange said. As of Sept. 15, it totaled about 22.780 billion shares, compared with 22.174 billion shares as of Aug. 31. Investors who sell short borrow shares and sell them, aiming to buy them back at a lower price and return them to the lender.
