Oklo and Centrus Discuss HALEU Fuel JV for 1.2GW Pike County Campus
California-based Oklo and Maryland-based Centrus have begun discussions for a joint venture to deconvert uranium into HALEU fuel at Pike County, supporting Oklo’s planned 1.2-gigawatt small modular reactor campus for Meta data centers. Centrus operates enrichment centrifuges at the former Portsmouth plant and holds $900 million in DOE funding for HALEU production.
1. Joint Venture Discussions
Oklo and Centrus have initiated discussions to form a joint venture focused on the deconversion process that transforms enriched uranium into high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) fuel. This collaboration aims to centralize HALEU fabrication, reduce shipping costs and strengthen the domestic nuclear fuel supply chain for advanced reactors.
2. HALEU Enrichment Capacity
Centrus operates centrifuge enrichment facilities at the former Portsmouth Gaseous Diffusion Plant near Piketon and has secured $900 million in Department of Energy funding to scale HALEU production. Oklo plans to leverage this enriched uranium supply for its developmental small modular reactors.
3. Pike County Reactor Campus Development
Oklo is designing a 1.2-gigawatt nuclear power campus in Pike County to provide reliable, low-carbon energy for Meta’s regional data centers. The project integrates advanced reactor designs and explores future R&D partnerships to recycle spent fuel and enhance overall fuel-cycle efficiency.
