OpenAI Launches Robotics Division to Rival Tesla Optimus, Tesla Shares Dip
TSLA•OpenAI formed a robotics division to develop humanoid robots for infrastructure projects and personal use, directly challenging Tesla’s Optimus. Tesla shares fell on concerns Optimus production—scheduled to start late this year after Fremont’s July/August assembly line conversion targeting one million annual units—now faces a credible rival.
1. OpenAI Launches Dedicated Robotics Arm
OpenAI Robotics will design hardware, controls, systems and machine learning algorithms for humanoid robots aimed initially at skilled infrastructure work and eventually personal assistance, marking the company’s first major hardware initiative.
2. Direct Competition with Tesla’s Optimus
This new division positions OpenAI as a direct competitor to Tesla’s Optimus program, which has been touted by Tesla as a path to future multi-trillion-dollar valuation driven by humanoid robot sales.
3. Optimus Production Timeline at Fremont
Tesla plans to complete the Fremont factory conversion from Model S and X assembly into an Optimus cell by late July or August, with tooling installation in Q2 and a goal of one million units of annual capacity.
4. Stock Reaction and Valuation Impact
Tesla shares declined on concerns that a credible AI-first rival could undercut Optimus before mass production begins, potentially delaying or reducing the expected revenue boost from humanoid robots.
