Pantera Capital sees power shortages bolstering data center pricing power
XLK•Pantera Capital’s analysis says power and GPU shortages could sustain outsized data center and specialized cloud margins. It estimates each gigawatt requires $41 billion of investment and could generate $44 billion in annual inference revenue at 60% utilization.
1. Capacity and pricing
Pantera Capital’s AI compute analysis says data centers may be under-earning, with uncontracted capacity having the greatest pricing upside while power remains the binding constraint. Specialized cloud providers could face longer-term margin pressure as GPU availability improves and customers prioritize low prices and availability over service quality.
2. Revenue and margins
The analysis estimates that a 40% cut in token prices would leave standalone inference providers breaking even, while vertically integrated hyperscalers would retain 70% incremental EBITDA margins. It estimates each gigawatt requires $41 billion of investment and could generate $44 billion in annual inference revenue at 60% utilization.
