PayPal Integrates Mastercard Agent Pay for AI-Driven Wallet Transactions
PayPal announced integration of Mastercard Agent Pay into its digital wallet in October, enabling AI agents to initiate and complete transactions on behalf of users. This follows Mastercard Agent Pay’s rollouts in the US, Australia and New Zealand and the debut of Europe’s first AI-executed payment with Santander.
1. PayPal Integration of Mastercard Agent Pay
In October, PayPal announced that Mastercard Agent Pay will be embedded into its wallet, allowing AI agents to complete transactions within user-defined permissions. This feature aims to streamline payments by automating transaction steps while preserving user control over spending limits.
2. Global Rollout Milestones
Mastercard Agent Pay launched in the US last year with Citi and US Bank cardholders, expanded to Australia in January via Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and reached New Zealand in February with Westpac. These deployments have tested the underlying technology and consumer acceptance ahead of broader rollouts.
3. European Debut with Santander
Santander and Mastercard executed Europe’s first fully authenticated agentic payment under regulatory framework, demonstrating the system’s readiness for regulated markets. This milestone highlights the capacity of AI agents to operate within strict security, privacy and governance standards.
4. Security Framework and Future Plans
PayPal and partners emphasize predefined limits, encryption and consumer protections to ensure security and privacy. Ongoing testing and scaling will explore new use cases, additional banking partnerships and consumer adoption strategies, positioning PayPal at the forefront of AI-powered commerce.
