PG&E Launches AC Vehicle-to-Grid Pilot with Tesla Cybertruck and $4,500 Incentive
PG&E has approved Tesla Cybertruck and Powershare Gateway for its new residential V2X pilot, enabling customers to power homes during outages and sell electricity back during grid events with up to $4,500 in equipment incentives. This first AC-based vehicle-to-grid application in California simplifies installation and enhances grid flexibility and resilience.
1. Program Approval and Scope
Pacific Gas and Electric has approved the Tesla Cybertruck as the first AC vehicle model for its residential Vehicle-to-Everything pilot, enabling bidirectional power flow. The program allows Cybertruck owners to install Powershare Gateway and Universal Wall Connector to export electricity to homes or the grid during designated events.
2. Incentives and Participation
Participants may receive up to $4,500 in incentives for bidirectional-enabled equipment and utility interconnection costs, with additional payments for grid support or backup power events. Enrollment is opt-in and event-based, ensuring customers retain full control over their driving needs and backup power settings.
3. Technical Advantages and Grid Impact
The AC-based V2X approach reduces hardware and installation complexity compared to DC systems, lowering costs and improving interoperability with home electrical systems. By turning EVs into flexible energy resources, the program aims to strengthen grid resilience during peak demand and outages.
