PG&E Surpasses 1 Million Solar Interconnections, Boosts Grid Modernization and VPP Expansion
PCG•Pacific Gas and Electric Company has connected over 1 million customer solar systems to its grid—the highest total among U.S. utilities—adding more than 500,000 interconnections from 2020 to 2025 and over 70,000 annually in the past two years. The initiative underpins PG&E’s grid modernization and virtual power plant expansion.
1. Milestone Achievement
PG&E has surpassed one million customer solar interconnections, the highest among U.S. utilities, reflecting decades of adoption and policy support. More than 500,000 systems were added between 2020 and 2025, with annual installations exceeding 70,000 over the past two years across Northern and Central California.
2. Grid Modernization and Integration
To accommodate unprecedented two-way power flows, PG&E is investing in grid automation, advanced forecasting, and streamlined interconnection processes. These efforts ensure safe and reliable integration of customer-sited solar and battery storage as core components of the electric network.
3. Virtual Power Plant Expansion
PG&E has tested virtual power plants that aggregate customer solar and battery systems to deliver 535 megawatts during peak demand periods. Ongoing programs such as Demand Side Grid Support and Emergency Load Reduction leverage these assets to enhance grid resilience and reduce system strain.
