Plug Power Installs 100MW Hydrogen Electrolyzers at Sines Refinery Reducing 110,000 Ton CO₂

PLUGPLUG

Plug Power completed installation of 100 MW of PEM GenEco electrolyzers at Galp’s Sines Refinery, enabling 15,000 tons/year of renewable hydrogen output to replace 20% of grey hydrogen and cut 110,000 tons of CO₂e annually. It also secured a contingent GenKey System materials license for Walmart.

1. Completion of 100 MW GenEco Electrolyzer Installation

Plug Power announced that all ten PEM GenEco electrolyzer arrays, totaling 100 MW, have been delivered and installed at Galp’s Sines Refinery in Portugal. The first 10 MW module arrived in October 2025, and over the subsequent three months the remaining nine modules were mounted on site and integrated into the refinery’s hydrogen supply infrastructure. Commissioning activities are scheduled to commence in the coming weeks, marking the end of Plug Power’s initial delivery phase and the beginning of operational validation across the full system.

2. Expected Environmental and Operational Benefits

Once fully operational, the 100 MW installation is projected to produce up to 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen annually. This output will displace approximately 20% of the refinery’s current grey hydrogen consumption, resulting in a reduction of 110,000 tons of CO₂ equivalent emissions per year on a Scope 1 and Scope 2 basis. By leveraging scalable PEM technology, the Sines project demonstrates how modular electrolyzer deployments can both decarbonize hard-to-electrify processes and deliver measurable emissions savings at an industrial scale.

3. Strategic European Expansion and $2 B Pipeline

The Sines initiative represents a cornerstone of Plug Power’s broader European growth strategy, which encompasses multi-gigawatt electrolyzer deployments across Spain, the United Kingdom and other key markets. Management reports that the company’s global opportunity funnel now exceeds $2 billion, with projects in advanced negotiations or under contract. Plug Power has emphasized its ability to combine U.S. and European-manufactured components to optimize supply-chain resilience and drive down unit costs as deployment scales accelerate.

4. GenKey System Licensing Agreement with Walmart

In a separate development, Plug Power entered into an agreement granting Walmart a contingent, limited-use license to access escrowed materials related to its GenKey System. Under the terms disclosed in a recent SEC filing, Walmart will gain rights to specific design and operational documentation if certain performance milestones are met. This deal underscores Plug Power’s strategy of monetizing intellectual property alongside equipment sales, while forging partnerships with large corporate end users to broaden its market footprint.
