Plug Power won a 50MW GenEco PEM electrolyzer contract for Orica’s Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub, which has reached FID and will produce 4,700 tonnes of hydrogen. Australia’s largest hydrogen project to reach FID will replace 7.5% of Orica’s natural gas, cutting emissions equal to 26,500 cars per year.
Plug Power’s GenEco PEM electrolyzers will power the 50MW Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub in Newcastle, New South Wales, which has reached final investment decision and entered the execution phase. This FID marks the facility as the largest green hydrogen project in Australia to move into construction.
At full capacity the hub will produce approximately 4,700 tonnes of hydrogen per year, displacing 7.5% of Orica’s natural gas use at its ammonia plant. This reduction is equivalent to removing emissions from roughly 26,500 cars annually, supporting Orica’s decarbonization goals.
The Hunter Valley project underscores Plug Power’s growing footprint in Australia alongside existing Townsville and Chinchilla installations. It also adds to a global pipeline that includes a 100MW electrolyzer in Portugal, reinforcing the company’s position in large-scale hydrogen deployments.
