Plug Power Secures FID for 30 MW UK Green Hydrogen Project
Plug Power has secured final investment decision for the 30 MW Barrow-in-Furness green hydrogen project, supplying six 5 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzers. The facility will produce ~100 GWh of hydrogen yearly for Kimberly-Clark, cutting 18,300 tonnes of CO2 and representing the first of three UK projects to enter execution.
1. Final Investment Decision Reached
Plug Power confirmed that the Barrow Green Hydrogen project has reached final investment decision under the GHECO joint venture, unlocking the shift from award to execution. This milestone enables immediate procurement and construction of six 5 MW GenEco PEM electrolyzers for the 30 MW facility in Barrow-in-Furness.
2. Project Scope and Environmental Impact
Once operational, the Barrow facility will use renewable electricity under a long-term PPA to produce approximately 100 GWh of green hydrogen annually for Kimberly-Clark’s local manufacturing site. This supply is projected to halve the plant’s natural gas use and avoid 18,300 tonnes of CO2 emissions each year.
3. European Expansion Pipeline
Barrow is the first of three UK projects awarded 55 MW of Plug’s GenEco electrolyzers, with Trafford and Langage moving toward their own FIDs. The project underscores Plug Power’s strategic focus on Europe, where it is advancing multi-gigawatt green hydrogen initiatives supported by a global opportunity pipeline exceeding $2 billion.
