1. Clashes across France
Violent clashes erupted between police and protesters in several French cities on Saturday during demonstrations over rising costs and declining public services. The Interior Ministry said at least 191 people had been arrested after violent incidents, including in Paris, Marseille, Toulouse, Angers and Lyon.
2. Protest grievances
The CGT union estimated that 800,000 people took part across France; the Interior Ministry did not provide a turnout estimate. Protesters cited the cost of living, fuel prices, teacher shortages and school conditions. Police used tear gas in Paris, while fires and damage to shops, cars and public buildings were reported in several cities.
3. European demonstrations
Smaller protests also took place in Belgium, Portugal, Italy and Albania. In France, the movement began at high schools in Paris suburbs last month and broadened to focus on inequality, public spending and living standards. The police watchdog is investigating at least two dozen allegations of police violence.
