Polish president says he signed windfall tax bill
XLE•President Karol Nawrocki said he signed a bill imposing a 60% tax on 2026 fuel sales revenues exceeding the previous-year average by 20%. Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski said pump prices could fall by 1.2–1.3 zlotys per liter as early as the weekend.
1. Tax bill signed
Polish President Karol Nawrocki said Thursday evening that he had signed a windfall tax bill targeting energy companies. Parliament approved the measure to tax windfall profits generated by oil and gas companies.
2. Fuel price plans
The bill sets a 60% tax on 2026 revenues from fuel sales that exceed the previous-year average by 20%. Finance Minister Andrzej Domanski said the legislation would be published Friday and pump prices could drop by 1.2–1.3 zlotys per liter as early as the weekend. He said he wanted the lower-price programme to remain in place at least until the end of the year. Prime Minister Donald Tusk said proceeds would be used to lower pump prices if the bill became law.
3. Earlier objections
Nawrocki had referred an earlier version of the bill to the constitutional court, citing concerns about its retroactive nature and potential effect on consumers.
