Primerica survey shows 71% of middle-income Americans say income trails cost of living

Primerica’s Q2 2026 Financial Security Monitor showed rising costs tightening middle-income budgets, limiting saving and major purchases.
- 71% reported income falling behind the cost of living; 74% rated their ability to save for the future negatively.
- 66% said they are not saving enough to retire comfortably; 67% delayed a major purchase or expense.
- 46% cut everyday spending; 32% adopted a stricter monthly budget; 60% of employed respondents had or considered a second job.
- 59% expected the US economy to be worse over the next year; 58% reported an emergency fund covering $1,000 or more.
