PSEG Long Island Boosts Grid Resilience with 10,000 Reclosers and 45% Outage Reduction
PEG•PSEG Long Island has storm hardened over 1,400 miles of circuits since 2014, cutting damage by 45% on those lines from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026. It has installed 8,500 automatic branch line reclosers this year, raising the network total to 10,000 units ahead of peak summer demand.
1. Summer Preparedness and Grid Improvements
PSEG Long Island has completed targeted substation, transmission and distribution upgrades ahead of peak summer demand, incorporating helicopter inspections and infrared technology to identify vulnerabilities across the network.
2. Storm Hardening Results
Since 2014, the company has strengthened over 1,400 miles of distribution circuits with stronger poles, wires and crossarms, achieving a 45% reduction in damage after storms on hardened sections from Q1 2025 to Q1 2026.
3. Automatic Branch Line Recloser Expansion
Leveraging FEMA funding, PSEG Long Island installed 8,500 automatic reclosers this year, bringing the systemwide total to 10,000 units and enabling faster fault isolation and service restoration.
4. Operational Role and Ownership
Operating under a long-term contract with the Long Island Power Authority, PSEG Long Island is a subsidiary of Public Service Enterprise Group, managing transmission and distribution for the region.
