PTC Launches Onshape Cloud-Native MBD with Integrated 3D Annotations
PTC released fully cloud-native Model-Based Definition built directly into its Onshape CAD and PDM platform, embedding GD&T, weld symbols and datums into live 3D models. The feature enables shareable MBD views via URLs and STEP AP242 export, reducing design-to-production cycle times and improving change control.
1. Cloud-Native Model-Based Definition Features
PTC’s new MBD capability is built directly into Onshape’s cloud-native CAD and PDM platform, allowing engineers to embed GD&T, weld symbols and datums directly into the 3D model. Key functionalities include an automated smart inspection panel, shareable MBD views via simple URLs, feature tree awareness and support for STEP AP242 export and downstream inspection tools.
2. Efficiency and Collaboration Benefits
By consolidating manufacturing information within the live 3D model, the feature reduces handoffs, minimizes version discrepancies and accelerates design-to-production workflows. Early users report cutting rework and review cycles, improving change control and enabling real-time collaboration across engineering and manufacturing teams.
3. Strategic AWS Partnership
Built on AWS infrastructure, Onshape’s cloud-native MBD leverages scalable compute and emerging AI services to support global deployment and resilient performance. The collaboration with AWS underpins friction-free, real-time access and future AI-driven enhancements to PTC’s Intelligent Product Lifecycle vision.
