Qatar says Iran needs to show good intentions for mediation efforts to succeed
USO•Qatar said Iran needs to show good intentions for mediation efforts to succeed, urging it to stop threats against Gulf Arab states and open the Strait of Hormuz. Qatar and Pakistan are mediating between Washington and Tehran as the conflict disrupts global shipping and oil supplies.
1. Qatar’s conditions for mediation
A Qatari Foreign Ministry spokesperson said Iran should stop threats against Arab Gulf states and open the Strait of Hormuz to show good intentions. The comments followed a visit to Tehran by a Qatari delegation earlier this week to pursue de-escalation in coordination with the United States.
2. Regional tensions persist
Qatar and Pakistan have been mediating between Washington and Tehran in an effort to end the war, which has disrupted global shipping and oil supplies and spread to other parts of the Middle East. Officials from Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Pakistan also met Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday. The report said Yemen’s Houthis launched new attacks on Saudi Arabia, while Egypt approved defence support for the kingdom.
3. Threats of further attacks
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have sharpened, with President Donald Trump saying on Friday that the United States may strike Iran again. Iranian security officials said Tehran had drawn up plans to attack Gulf undersea cables if the United States and Israel attack again.
