Continued L87 V8 Engine Failures Prompt New NHTSA Investigation

General Motors faces fresh NHTSA scrutiny after post-recall failures of its L87 V8 engines continue to surface, with drivers reporting repeat malfunctions. These ongoing defects could force GM to increase warranty reserves and expose it to additional regulatory fines, heightening cost pressures.

1. L87 V8 Engine Recall Fallout and Regulatory Scrutiny

General Motors continues to grapple with persistent issues in its high-output L87 V8 engine platform. Despite launching a recall program last summer to replace faulty fuel injectors and update engine control software, the company has received over 3,500 new complaints of engine stalling, misfires and “limp-home” mode activations since November 2025. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has opened an expanded investigation under PE26-012, citing concerns that the original fix may not fully address underlying injector seal failures and combustion chamber deposits. Early GM estimates put the incremental warranty and service campaign costs at $120 million, and internal projections warn of an additional $50 million in potential fines if NHTSA deems the remedy insufficient. Management has established a cross-functional task force to collaborate with supplier Delphi Injection Systems on redesigning the injector O-rings and implementing more rigorous end-of-line quality checks by Q3 2026.

2. Full-Size Truck Profitability and Market Position

Full-size pickup trucks remain the cornerstone of GM’s North American profitability, contributing over 40% of the corporation’s gross automotive profits in fiscal 2025. The Silverado series, refreshed in late 2024 with an updated chassis and improved MaxTow towing package, sold 267,000 units last year—up 6% year-over-year—while commanding an average transaction price roughly 15% above mid-cycle competitors. Internal sales data shows that Silverado High Country and LTZ models alone generated approximately $3.1 billion in adjusted operating income during the fourth quarter, offsetting margin pressures in the EV and compact crossover segments. With the upcoming launch of the ZR2 off-road variant in spring 2026, GM forecasts a further 2-3% uptick in full-size truck ASPs, reinforcing its leadership against Ford’s F-150 and Stellantis’s Ram 1500 in the high-margin pickup arena.
