Rivian and EnergyHub Launch Grid-Aware EV Charging Program Across North America
Rivian has partnered with EnergyHub to enable passive and active managed charging programs for its North American EV fleet, integrating grid-aware technology directly into Rivian’s software ecosystem. The collaboration aims to expand utility EV program participation and enhance grid reliability by shaping charging behavior across distribution networks.
1. Partnership Overview
Rivian has joined EnergyHub to expand utility EV programs and managed charging across North America, making its vehicles eligible for both passive and active programs. The alliance integrates EnergyHub’s grid-edge flexibility platform into Rivian’s direct-to-driver engagement, targeting scalable recruitment of EV drivers by utilities.
2. Managed Charging Technology
EnergyHub’s grid-aware managed charging uses dynamic load shaping to align Rivian vehicle charging with distribution network capacity, protecting infrastructure and optimizing energy use. This software-enabled feature will operate alongside other DERs on EnergyHub’s Virtual Power Plant platform, supporting over 2.5 million devices and 3.5 GW of flexible capacity.
3. Impact on Drivers and Utilities
For Rivian drivers, built-in smart charging features lower charging costs and simplify EV ownership by syncing charging with local grid conditions. Utilities benefit from streamlined enrollment and scalable cost-effective managed charging solutions that leverage EV batteries as grid resources, promoting a more reliable and affordable energy system.
