ROI-AI challenges fuel trading's old guard: Russell
USO•AI tools from Sparta Commodities and competitors aim to speed up analysis and recommendations in opaque refined-fuel markets. Sparta's Leonidas AI produced five proposed trades in seconds during a demonstration, while executives expect AI to play a growing role in commodity data analysis and operations.
1. AI enters fuel trading
Refined-fuel trading, particularly in Asia, has largely been dominated by a relatively small group of traders representing producers, refiners, shippers and commodity houses. Sparta Commodities launched Leonidas AI earlier this month, combining data from its own and outside sources with news and specialized expertise to generate recommendations.
2. Rapid trade proposals
In a demonstration, Leonidas AI assessed the possible effects of a U.S. diesel export ban and produced five proposed trades ranked by conviction, covering several markets and including a freight recommendation. The process took seconds. Kpler and Windward are also rolling out or developing AI products for commodity-market analysis.
3. Adoption and risks
The column notes that AI recommendations may prove crowded or ineffective, and established traders could resist new entrants. At the Asia Pacific Petroleum Conference, executives discussed AI's growing role in data analysis, shipping and inventory management. Sparta CEO Felipe Elink Schuurman said trading desks that can turn data into trading moves fastest will be the new winners.
