Rooney labels Man United players 'selfish' after Fernandes criticism
MANU•Wayne Rooney called Manchester United's players “selfish” and “like babies” after Bruno Fernandes criticized the coaching staff's tactics following a 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. United are winless in seven matches across all competitions and sit 20th in the Champions League and 13th in the Premier League.
1. Rooney criticizes players
Wayne Rooney said Manchester United players were “selfish” and “like babies” after captain Bruno Fernandes questioned the coaching staff's tactics following the team's 4-1 Champions League defeat by Como. Fernandes said United had failed to apply enough pressure and adopted a “mood of defeat” after conceding in the second minute; Joshua Zirkzee scored a stoppage-time goal.
2. Pressure on Carrick
Rooney said Fernandes's comments followed defender Lisandro Martinez's earlier criticism of the club's hierarchy and warned that players were avoiding responsibility. Manager Michael Carrick, appointed interim manager after Ruben Amorim's dismissal in January and later given a contract through 2028, is under growing pressure. United are winless in seven matches across all competitions, 20th in the Champions League standings and 13th in the Premier League.
