Rubio says war in Ukraine is at a dangerous stalemate
SPY•Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Russia’s war in Ukraine is at a dangerous stalemate and the United States will continue working toward a settlement. He warned escalation could broaden the conflict and said the U.S. would not invest in processes that cannot make progress.
1. Settlement efforts
Rubio said the United States wants a permanent, enduring and fair negotiated settlement and is committed to continuing efforts to reach one. Ukrainian negotiators are set to visit the United States for talks on Friday and Saturday.
2. Risk of wider conflict
Rubio said escalation could lead to a sabotage campaign in neighboring NATO member countries and turn the war between Russia and Ukraine into a broader regional conflict. He said the U.S. stands ready to facilitate a settlement but will not invest in processes that cannot make progress.
