Samsung SDI, GM sign agreement to co-develop next-generation prismatic battery cells
GM•Samsung SDI to buy out GM stake in Indiana plant
Samsung SDI will buy GM’s 49.99% stake in the SynergyCells joint venture plant in New Carlisle, Indiana.
The move makes the site Samsung SDI’s first wholly owned North American battery plant, reflecting slower-than-expected EV demand growth. The facility will initially shift to energy storage system batteries, with potential to add the jointly developed prismatic cells later.
Joint development agreement for next-generation EV cells
Samsung SDI signed a joint development agreement with GM to co-develop a next-generation prismatic EV battery cell.
The program targets higher energy density cells with faster charging, extending the companies’ strategic partnership.
