Santander, Mastercard Complete Europe’s First AI Agent Payment in Regulated Banking
Mastercard and Santander executed Europe’s first live end-to-end AI agent payment under a regulated banking framework using Mastercard Agent Pay. Santander will begin extended testing and scaling of agentic payments with Stripe, Google and Ant International’s Antom, underscoring its operational readiness and security focus.

Santander and Mastercard have successfully executed Europe’s first live end-to-end payment conducted by an AI agent under a regulated banking framework, marking a pivotal step in agentic commerce.
2. Technical Integration and Governance
Mastercard Agent Pay embeds AI agents into the payment flow with predefined permissions, strict security and privacy controls, and uses PayOS for end-to-end transaction orchestration among issuers, acquirers and merchants.

Following this milestone, Santander will move into extended testing and scaling phases, exploring additional AI-driven payment use cases and partnerships while ensuring regulatory alignment, resilience and strong governance controls.
