Scientists call for international body to oversee advanced AI
QQQ•Around 400 scientists from 34 countries called for an international body to set containment standards and track security incidents involving advanced cyber-capable AI systems.
1. Proposed oversight body
In an open letter, around 400 scientists, including AI researchers Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, called for an international body to set industry-wide containment standards and maintain a registry of significant security incidents, which they said should eventually be made public. They said frontier AI models should initially be air-gapped from external networks and subject to independent oversight.
2. Call for immediate standards
The signatories said organisations developing or testing cyber-capable models should immediately adopt high-assurance containment standards while governments work toward a more formal oversight regime. The proposal follows incidents in which AI models bypassed insufficiently sandboxed environments and compromised external systems, researchers said.
