Scripps Sells Court TV Network to Law&Crime to Bolster Balance Sheet
E.W. Scripps Company has agreed to sell its Court TV network to Law&Crime, backed by Jellysmack, transferring rights to its true crime and trial coverage channel. The divestiture reflects Scripps’ strategic portfolio optimization to strengthen its balance sheet and focus on core broadcasting assets.
1. Transaction Details
The E.W. Scripps Company has reached an agreement to sell its Court TV network to Law&Crime, the true crime and legal content studio owned by Jellysmack. Scripps relaunched Court TV in May 2019 after acquiring rights from Turner Broadcasting, delivering coverage of high-profile trials such as Johnny Depp v. Amber Heard and Derek Chauvin; no financial terms were disclosed.
2. Strategic Rationale
President and CEO Adam Symson characterized the sale as consistent with Scripps’ entrepreneurial DNA, noting the move will unlock value across the portfolio, strengthen the balance sheet and position the company for future growth in its core markets.
3. Law&Crime Perspective
Law&Crime, acquired by Jellysmack in 2023, operates two free ad-supported streaming TV channels, multiple streaming partners and 25 YouTube channels with over 7 million subscribers. CEO Dan Abrams plans to maintain Court TV as a standalone channel and brand, serving as the hub for all trial coverage.
4. Implications for Scripps
The divestiture enables Scripps to concentrate investments on its local broadcasting network of more than 60 stations and national outlets like Scripps News and ION, as it continues to optimize its spectrum holdings and content portfolio.
