Shell Launches 3,800km² 3D Seismic Survey with TPAO in Khan Tervel Field
Shell will conduct a 3,800km² 3D seismic survey in Bulgaria’s Khan Tervel Black Sea field in partnership with TPAO, where Shell holds the exploration licence. The joint project leverages TPAO’s regional experience and Shell’s technical expertise to inform future exploration wells and support potential new gas reserves.
1. Partnership Overview
Shell has taken on the operator role for the exploration licence in the Khan Tervel offshore field in Bulgaria’s Black Sea, partnering with Turkish state-owned TPAO to combine technical expertise and regional experience.
2. Seismic Survey Plans
The initial phase will involve a 3,800km² 3D seismic survey to gather subsurface data, with survey results intended to guide decisions on drilling future exploration wells in the licence area.
3. Strategic and Portfolio Implications
This collaboration expands Shell’s exploration footprint in the Black Sea region and, if seismic data supports viable reserves, could add new offshore gas resources to Shell’s long-term portfolio.
