Skyworks Launches Si829x Gate Driver Cutting Switching Losses by 44%
SWKS•Skyworks introduced the Si829x gate driver platform featuring ProVCD variable current drive to cut switching losses by up to 44% and enable precise 15 A waveform control across SiC and IGBT inverters for EVs and other electrified systems. Production starts end-July 2026 with ASIL-D safety compliance and software-configurable parameters.
1. Si829x Gate Driver Platform Unveiled
Skyworks has rolled out the Si829x isolated safety gate driver designed for EV traction inverters, industrial motor drives and emerging mobility systems. The platform caters to battery electric, hybrid and plug-in hybrid vehicles, as well as eTrucking, eAgriculture, robotaxis and eVTOL aircraft, offering a unified solution across multiple power architectures.
2. ProVCD Variable Current Drive
The Si829x utilizes ProVCD™ second-generation variable current drive to shape gate waveforms with high resolution and cycle-by-cycle digital control. This approach reduces switching losses by up to 44%, mitigates EMI, improves thermal efficiency via multiple packaging options and delivers precise 15 A three-phase turn-on/turn-off control in a smaller PCB footprint.
3. Functional Safety and Diagnostics
Developed to ISO 26262 standards for systems up to ASIL D, the Si829x integrates comprehensive diagnostics including fault coverage, notification, power-up self-checks and safe-state enforcement. Its globally certified isolation technology ensures robustness and reliability for advanced automotive and industrial applications.
4. Production Timeline and Market Impact
Mass production of the Si829x is slated for end-July 2026, with software-configurable drive parameters enabling design reuse and faster validation cycles. By standardizing inverter designs across SiC and IGBT platforms, Skyworks aims to help automakers improve efficiency, reduce system cost and accelerate EV drivetrain development.
