Smith & Nephew Unveils First German Risk-Based sNPWT Guidelines with 300 ml Exudate Cap
SNN•Smith & Nephew published Germany’s first risk-based expert consensus for sNPWT in closed surgical incisions, recommending therapy for patients with obesity, diabetes or prolonged surgery and wounds with up to 300 ml exudate weekly. The guidelines aim to streamline PICO 7 adoption and reduce postoperative complications.
1. Publication of German Risk-Based sNPWT Consensus
Smith & Nephew announced Germany’s first expert consensus translating clinical evidence into risk-based recommendations for single-use negative pressure wound therapy (sNPWT) in closed surgical incisions. The guidance focuses on reducing postoperative complications such as prolonged drainage and seroma formation through structured preventive strategies.
2. Patient Selection and Usage Criteria
The consensus identifies key risk factors—obesity, diabetes, smoking and prolonged or revision surgery—and recommends sNPWT for incisions with anticipated exudate volumes up to 300 ml per week. This clearly-defined criteria framework enables clinicians to tailor PICO 7 therapy based on individual patient risk profiles.
3. PICO 7 System Features and Benefits
Smith & Nephew’s PICO 7 sNPWT system offers a canister-free design, portable pump and visual leak and battery indicators to support integration into inpatient and outpatient care. Controlled negative pressure therapy demonstrated removal of exudate, seroma risk reduction and promotion of wound healing in clinical studies.
