Snap Bets $2,195 AR Glasses on Reviving Real-World Social Interaction
SNAP•Snap launched pre-orders for its $2,195 augmented reality glasses built entirely in-house, betting on off-screen computing to foster real-world social interactions. CEO Evan Spiegel says Specs will expand from developer previews to consumer events this fall and remains wholly funded by Snap’s core cash.
1. Specs Launch and Pricing
Snap launched pre-orders for its long-awaited Specs augmented reality glasses at $2,195, targeting the developer community initially. Unlike competitors partnering for frames, Snap built both the hardware and software in-house to ensure end-to-end user experience.
2. Shift to In-Person Social Networks
CEO Evan Spiegel describes Specs as the next evolution of human computing, aiming to bring interactions off screens and back into the physical world. He argues that see-through glasses will make social networking feel more like face-to-face conversation, building on Snapchat’s ephemeral messaging and Stories.
3. Funding Structure and Future Plans
Specs operates as a wholly owned Snap subsidiary funded by the parent’s core cash resources. Spiegel outlined plans for consumer-oriented events this fall and did not rule out spinning off the unit or raising external capital to accelerate growth.
