To ensure every AFEELA 1 meets stringent reliability and design benchmarks, Sony Honda Mobility has set up Quality Gate, a dedicated inspection facility adjacent to the East Liberty plant. Equipped with automated vision systems and environmental testing chambers, Quality Gate performs two primary inspection streams: function verification of intelligent features—including over-the-air connectivity stability, sensor performance and in-vehicle user interface responsiveness—and exterior quality checks covering panel alignment, paint uniformity and reflective consistency. Data from over 1,200 measurement points per vehicle will be captured and stored in a centralized analytics platform.

3. Data-Driven Feedback Loop to Optimize Production

Quality Gate is more than a final checkpoint; it serves as a real-time feedback hub for continuous improvement. Inspection data—covering up to 500 parameters per car—will be transmitted to Sony Honda Mobility’s design team in Tokyo and to the assembly lines at East Liberty. Engineers will analyze patterns in component tolerances, software calibration results and surface finish metrics to refine robot programming, adjust supplier tolerances and update AI algorithms for sensor fusion. This closed-loop approach aims to reduce defect rates by at least 30% before full-scale manufacturing begins.

4. California Deliveries Set for 2026 and Strategic Implications

Sony Honda Mobility has slated the first customer deliveries of the AFEELA 1 in California for mid-2026, targeting technology-savvy early adopters. By leveraging Honda’s established U.S. manufacturing footprint and Sony’s expertise in imaging and AI, the joint venture positions itself to capture market share in the premium electric vehicle segment.
