Space42 and Viasat Outline Equatys Platform with 2,800-Satellite D2D Network

VSATVSAT

Space42 and Viasat unveiled progress on Equatys D2D infrastructure at Mobile World Congress, detailing a shared neutral platform designed to integrate terrestrial and satellite networks across 3GPP-based L- and S-band spectrum and support up to 2,800 satellites. Partnerships with e& UAE and Telkomsat Indonesia signal initial commercial engagements.

1. Equatys Progress at MWC

At Mobile World Congress, Space42 and Viasat co-presented the technical direction and commercial vision for Equatys, marking the first public showcase of their planned Direct-to-Device infrastructure and shared neutral platform to extend 3GPP-based connectivity globally.

2. Technical Architecture

Equatys is designed to operate initially in harmonized L- and S-band MSS spectrum with capacity across over 100 MHz, leveraging a neutral multi-participant Tower Co. model and a scalable constellation of up to 2,800 satellites in 60 orbital planes across three altitude layers.

3. Commercial Engagements

The venture has engaged e& UAE and PT Telkomsat Indonesia to explore Equatys-enabled D2D connectivity, reflecting mobile network operators’ interest in integrated satellite-terrestrial coverage and aligning with national regulatory frameworks and 3GPP standards.

4. Next Steps

Space42 and Viasat will advance Equatys through definitive agreements, regulatory approvals and phased deployment while inviting additional cofounders, satellite operators and spectrum holders to join the multi-tenant infrastructure ecosystem.
