Starbucks Commits $1 Billion for 1,000 Store Remodels with New Seating and Mugs
Starbucks will invest $1 billion to remodel 1,000 stores by end of 2026, allocating about $150,000 per location while minimizing downtime through delayed new builds. It will reintroduce updated purple lounge chairs and roll out redesigned porcelain mugs in select markets, aiming to boost in-store dwell time and traffic recovery.
1. Store Remodel Investment
Starbucks launched the Coffeehouse Uplift initiative, pledging about $1 billion to remodel 1,000 stores by the end of 2026. The plan allocates roughly $150,000 per location and aims to minimize customer disruption by prioritizing minor upgrades over full closures or new builds.
2. Introduction of New In-Store Amenities
The remodel includes reintroducing updated versions of the iconic purple lounge chairs, slated for select renovated and new stores by late 2026. Alongside seating, Starbucks is testing redesigned porcelain mugs—with wider mouths and ergonomic handles—in Los Angeles and New York City, with North American expansion later in 2026 and a global rollout in 2027.
3. Early Traffic Improvements and Strategic Shifts
Initial results point to improved in-store traffic and longer visit durations. As part of the same strategy, Starbucks plans to close its approximately 90 pickup-only locations and replace them with two new prototype formats, with about 90% of the $1 billion investment concentrated in North America.
