Steel forum calls for more tariffs, avoiding subsidies to loss-making plants
SLX•The Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity agreed on a framework calling for additional tariffs, where appropriate, on steel from countries that are major sources of excess capacity, and for avoiding subsidies that encourage loss-making plants.
1. Framework targets excess capacity
The forum’s 28 Western market-oriented economies agreed at a ministerial meeting to take stronger steps against imports from countries such as China and to refrain from subsidies that encourage construction of loss-making steel plants. China, India, Vietnam and Indonesia are not forum members.
