Street View: American Eagle's denim overhang tempers Aerie strength
AEO•Shares slump as annual outlook is reiterated
American Eagle Outfitters AEO.N shares slump about 14% to $14.54 in early trading.
The apparel retailer reiterated its annual comparable sales forecast, as uneven discretionary spending continued to weigh on seasonal merchandise at its namesake banner.
Median price target of 16 brokerages covering the stock is $18, according to data compiled by LSEG.
Analysts say Aerie strength is masking denim weakness
Raymond James ("market perform") says Aerie's strong growth continues to mask weakness at the larger American Eagle brand, where uneven demand, excess denim inventory and higher markdowns are likely to weigh on results in the second half.
BTIG ("neutral") says American Eagle is making progress in fixing its product assortment, particularly in bottoms and denim, but inventory overhangs, markdown pressure and tougher comparisons suggest the recovery remains a work in progress.
J.P. Morgan ("neutral", PT: $21) says American Eagle is making progress, but older denim inventory and continued markdowns leave limited room for upside in the second half.
Telsey Advisory Group ("market perform", PT: $18) says Aerie's broad-based momentum and customer gains remain impressive, but softer demand in women's apparel and inventory cleanup at American Eagle will keep pressure on profitability.
