A contractor linked to Super Micro pleaded guilty to four counts in a scheme to illegally export AI servers containing Nvidia chips to China. Prosecutors previously charged him and two others with conspiring to divert about $2.5 billion worth of U.S. AI technology to China.
Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun pleaded guilty to four counts, including conspiracies to violate U.S. export controls, smuggle goods, defraud the country and obstruct justice. He entered the plea Thursday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.
Prosecutors charged Sun and two others associated with Super Micro in March, alleging they conspired to divert about $2.5 billion worth of U.S. AI technology to China. The indictment said the scheme began around October 2023 and involved exporting servers without required licenses.
Super Micro said in prior statements that it was not named as a defendant and that the case had no impact on its business operations. The company said it terminated Sun and cut ties with the other defendants earlier this year.
