Tanker in Strait of Hormuz hit by explosives attached to small boat, UKMTO says
USO•A tanker in the Strait of Hormuz was hit by two explosive devices attached to a small boat, causing a fire that temporarily disabled the vessel. The crew were safe, the fire was extinguished and the tanker continued toward its next port.
1. Tanker hit near Oman
The tanker was struck on Thursday, 25 nautical miles northeast of Oman's Khasab, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations said. The blasts sparked a fire in the engine room and temporarily disabled the vessel; the crew were safe, there was no environmental impact and the fire was extinguished. The vessel was continuing to its next port of call.
2. Attacker not identified
It was not immediately clear who was behind the attack. Commercial shipping in and around the Strait of Hormuz has faced repeated attacks since the US-Iran conflict began in February, disrupting traffic through an important oil export route. Iran has targeted vessels it says violated its restrictions on passage through the strait.
