Tesla will integrate Powerwall batteries into a 16 GW distributed energy platform with Sunrun, deploying 300 MW in Virginia and scaling to 500 MW by 2030 for data centres and utilities. It creates the largest U.S. distributed power plant using Tesla Powerwalls and smart thermostats without new hardware or land.
Tesla has joined Sunrun and Renew Home to form a distributed energy platform that aggregates more than 16 GW of flexible capacity drawn from residential batteries and demand-response assets across the United States.
The network offers 300 MW of dispatchable power already available in Virginia and is set to expand to 500 MW by 2030 through additional Powerwall installations and connected energy devices.
The platform leverages existing Tesla Powerwalls alongside Renew Home’s smart thermostats, enabling rapid capacity deployment without requiring new hardware, software, transmission interconnections or land development.
This initiative strengthens Tesla’s energy storage division by opening a new revenue stream in grid services, supporting utility partnerships and enhancing reliability for hyperscale data centres.
