Tesla Raises 2026 Capex to $25B, Gears Up Semi and Optimus Production
Tesla plans to raise 2026 capital expenditures to $25B, triple prior years, funding AI, robotics and manufacturing expansion including chip design and data centers. The automaker will start Class 8 Semi volume production this year and begin Q2 preparations for its first Optimus robot factory, targeting 1M annual units.
1. 2026 Capital Expenditure Surge
Tesla announced a record $25 billion capital expenditure budget for 2026, up from $8.5 billion in 2025 and roughly three times its prior annual spend. The additional funds will fuel AI compute infrastructure, data centers, chip design, robotics initiatives and expanded manufacturing and R&D capacity.
2. Class 8 Semi Volume Production
The company confirmed that volume production of its Class 8 Tesla Semi truck will begin later this year, with an initial slow ramp expected before output accelerates into 2027. Preparations include expanding battery, cathode and lithium supply chains and deploying Megachargers to support commercial freight operations.
3. Optimus Robot Factory Preparations
In Q2, Tesla will convert its Fremont assembly lines to establish its first large-scale Optimus robot factory, aiming for a 1 million units per year run rate. A second-generation line planned at Gigafactory Texas targets up to 10 million annual robots, marking a key step in Tesla’s push into commercial robotics.
