Tesla has rolled out its unsupervised robotaxi service across the entire Austin metro area, marking its first full-city deployment of autonomous ride-hailing vehicles without safety drivers.
The company has deployed around 50 robotaxis in the region, with customers reporting wait times that can exceed 30 minutes, while competitor Waymo operates more than 250 autonomous vehicles in the same market.
This expansion underlines CEO Elon Musk’s strategic shift from electric vehicles toward AI and robotics, with Tesla planning to extend its fully self-driving fleet to additional U.S. cities later this year.
