Tesla set to unveil next-generation Roadster sports EV after years of delay
TSLA•Tesla is set to unveil its redesigned Roadster on Thursday, nearly nine years after showing a prototype. The car was initially priced at $200,000, reservations remain $50,000, and an analyst expects sales of around 2,000 a year.
1. Delayed reveal
Tesla is set to unveil its redesigned Roadster on Thursday, nearly nine years after first showing a prototype of the electric sports car. Tesla said in 2017 that the $200,000 car would begin deliveries in 2020; the price has not been updated, and reservations remain $50,000 each.
2. Performance claims
In 2017, Elon Musk said the four-seat Roadster would travel 620 miles on a single charge. He said in 2024 that it had been redesigned and would accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than a second, describing it as a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein expects Tesla to sell around 2,000 Roadsters a year, compared with 1.6 million vehicles sold by Tesla last year.
3. Role at Tesla
Musk has described the Roadster as a "small potato situation" that would not "move the needle in a major way financially." Goldstein called it a potential halo car showcasing Tesla's engineering and technology. The event is set to start at 8:55 p.m. EDT on Thursday at a SpaceX test site in McGregor, Texas.
