Tesla starts high-volume Semi assembly with 500-mile range at $290,000
TSLA•Tesla has ceased Model S and Model X production to convert its Fremont factory for high-volume Semi assembly in Nevada and is now accepting real orders. The Semi’s long-range version delivers up to 500 miles per charge at $290,000—$100,000 below rivals—and California fleets have applied for over 1,200 units.
1. Factory Transition and Semi Launch
Tesla ended production of its Model S and Model X to repurpose the Fremont facility for Semi manufacturing, with the first high-volume assembly line now operational in Nevada. This marks nearly a decade since the Semi was first unveiled, signalling Tesla’s commitment to electrify freight transport.
2. Semi Performance and Pricing Advantage
The long-range Semi offers up to 500 miles of range on a single charge and is priced at $290,000—about $100,000 less than comparable electric trucks from Daimler and Volvo. Rising diesel costs and a $120,000 California rebate make the Semi’s total cost competitive with diesel alternatives for regional carriers.
3. Market Response and Future Hurdles
California trucking firms have applied for state subsidies on more than 1,200 Semis, eclipsing applications for all other electric trucks since 2019. Tesla’s next challenge is scaling its charging network to support widespread adoption and ensure reliable operations for fleet customers.
