Tesla to wind down Cybertruck production around mid-2027 after years of poor sales
TSLA•Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas factory around mid-2027, CEO Elon Musk said, freeing capacity for the Cybercab. The company sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in the US last year, down 48% from 38,965 in 2024.
1. Production wind-down
Tesla will wind down Cybertruck production at its Texas gigafactory around mid-2027, CEO Elon Musk said, citing the need for capacity to make more Cybercabs. It was not immediately clear whether production would move to another facility or end entirely; Austin is the only known Tesla facility equipped to make the model’s specialized components.
2. Sales and recalls
Tesla sold 20,237 Cybertrucks in the US last year, down 48% from 38,965 in 2024, according to Kelley Blue Book. Musk had predicted annual sales of 250,000 units around the start of production in 2023. The Cybertruck has faced 11 recalls since going on sale in late 2023, and its stainless-steel design has limited approval in Europe because of pedestrian-impact rules.
3. Cybercab plans
Musk said the production wind-down would support the Cybercab, a robotaxi central to Tesla’s autonomous-vehicle ambitions. Tesla began offering paid rides in a small Austin fleet in September, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened an audit in September to review the basis for the vehicle’s self-certification. About 570 of Tesla’s more than 1,200 robotaxis operating in Texas are Cybercabs, according to the state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
