Tesla unveils next-generation Roadster sports EV with SpaceX thrusters
TSLA•Tesla unveiled a redesigned Roadster developed with SpaceX and said production would start in 2028. The company’s reservation page listed deposits of $50,000 for a Performance version and $250,000 for a Thrust version; CEO Elon Musk said it can reach 60 mph in less than one second.
1. Roadster details
Tesla demonstrated the two-seat vehicle, which used a suction system to drive upside down on a ramp and built-in thrusters to turn in the air and land. The use and legality of those features on public roads were not immediately clear.
2. Deposits and performance
Tesla’s reservation page showed a $50,000 deposit for the Performance version and a $250,000 deposit for the Thrust version, which includes “acceleration thrusters.” A Rocket variant, described as a single-seat model with a “full flight system,” is invite-only. Musk said the Roadster can accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than one second and reach a top speed of over 230 mph.
3. Delayed launch
Tesla first revealed a prototype in 2017 and said deliveries would begin in 2020. The company now says production will start in 2028. Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein expects Tesla to sell around 2,000 Roadsters a year, compared with 1.6 million vehicles sold by Tesla last year.
