Thai floods disrupt automakers and parts suppliers, industry federation says
XLY•Flooding has halted operations at around 10 Thai auto-parts manufacturers and disrupted deliveries to Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Nissan and Honda. The industrial sector has suffered an estimated 6 billion baht ($178 million) in flood damage, while automotive plants had stock to continue production until October 12.
1. Parts disruptions hit automakers
Around 10 auto-parts manufacturers in Thailand have suspended operations, mainly because flooding has prevented employees from reaching work, said Sompol Tanadumrongsak, president of the Thai Auto-Parts Manufacturers Association. Other suppliers have been unable to deliver parts because of logistics disruptions, said Surapong Paisitpattanapong, spokesperson for the Federation of Thai Industries' Automotive Industry Club. He said the delays have affected Toyota, Isuzu, Ford, Nissan and Honda.
2. Plants monitor supply
Toyota said its plants are slated to reopen on October 11, though that was still to be confirmed. Automakers are monitoring whether suppliers can resume production after floodwaters recede; if disruptions persist, parts may need to be sourced from Japan, Surapong said. The Federation of Thai Industries estimated industrial-sector flood damage at 6 billion baht ($178 million) and said automotive assembly plants had enough stock to continue production until October 12.
