Tonix Claims Analysis Finds 40.2% Fibromyalgia Opioid Prescriptions, Boosting TONMYA® Opportunity
TNXP•Tonix presented a retrospective claims analysis of 261,776 U.S. adults with fibromyalgia from April 2023 to March 2024, finding that 40.2% of Commercial/Medicare Advantage and 38.8% of Medicaid patients were prescribed opioids. Data highlight persistent opioid reliance—tramadol claims at 13.7% in Commercial/Medicare and oxycodone claims at 15.7% in Medicaid—and underscore potential demand for TONMYA®, the first new fibromyalgia drug launched in November 2025.
1. Study Design and Cohort Characteristics
The retrospective cohort study used Symphony Health closed claims data from April 2021 through April 2024, focusing on 261,776 adults diagnosed with fibromyalgia between April 2023 and March 2024. The cohort had a mean age of 52.3 years and was predominantly female (92.1%), with patients covered by Commercial, Medicare Advantage and Medicaid plans.
2. Opioid and Benzodiazepine Use Patterns
Among Commercial and Medicare Advantage patients, 40.2% received at least one opioid prescription—13.7% tramadol and 13.1% oxycodone—while 38.8% of Medicaid patients received opioids, led by 15.7% oxycodone and 11.1% tramadol. The Medication Possession Ratio averaged 0.39 for Commercial/Medicare and 0.40 for Medicaid, and concurrent benzodiazepine use was observed in roughly 20% of all cohorts.
3. Implications for TONMYA® Commercial Opportunity
The high and persistent reliance on opioids underscores a gap in effective non-opioid therapies and reinforces the market potential for TONMYA®, which launched in November 2025 as the first FDA-approved fibromyalgia treatment in over 15 years and holds market exclusivity through 2034 under multiple patents.
