Top US House Democrat committed to reversing 'unjustified' tariffs
SPY•Representative Richard Neal said he is committed to reversing President Donald Trump's tariffs and trade deals, but gave no specifics. Any effort to rescind tariffs is expected to face a Trump veto.
1. Neal opposes tariffs
Richard Neal, the Democrat expected to regain the chairmanship of the House Ways and Means Committee, said he is committed to reversing what he called President Donald Trump's “unjustified” tariffs and “backroom deals” on trade. Neal said the policies contributed to rising living costs and growing inequality.
2. Legislative hurdles
Neal did not provide specifics about his trade agenda, but said keeping Mexico and Canada in the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement is a priority. Democrats were expected to have the ability to pass legislation rescinding some tariff policies, but any such measures were expected to face a Trump veto that they could not override without significant Republican support.
