Toronto futures subdued ahead of domestic GDP data, Warsh's speech

Separately, U.S. President Donald Trump renamed Lake Ontario "Lake America" on Thursday, deepening a dispute with Canada that has already spawned tariffs on tens of billions of dollars in cross-border trade.

Canada's ambassador to Washington, Mark Wiseman, said on Thursday that the nation cannot accept a trade deal with the U.S. unless it ensures the survival of a robust Canadian auto assembly and parts industry.

GDP data, due at 8:30 a.m. ET, is expected to show that Canada's economy expanded at an annualized rate of 3.4% in the second quarter, according to economists polled by Reuters.

Fed Chair Kevin Warsh is set to speak at 10:00 a.m. ET at the U.S. central bank's closely watched economic symposium in Jackson Hole, where global investors will look for signals on the Fed's interest-rate outlook amid recent bond-market volatility.

Gold ticked up ahead of Warsh's appearance. Spot gold XAU= inched up 0.1%, while silver XAG= added 1.8%.

Meanwhile, oil prices were little changed as traders assessed stagnant U.S.-Iran diplomatic talks against some crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
